Cedar roof repairing. Is it worth it?

As a homeowner, you want to get the best value from your investment. There are several options you can have in the life of your cedar roof.

  1. Do nothing to the roof for the life of it, then replace it. Depending on the quality of shake, this can be anywhere from 10-25 years.
  2. Repair the roof only. Replacing broken shakes and ridge caps is essential to maintaining the integrity of the roof. Broken shakes and caps can allow water to ingress, potentially causing damage inside the house. An important point, though, is that repairing only does not extend the life of the roof because it does nothing to retard the impact of the weather and sun on the remaining surfaces.
  3. Repair the broken shakes and caps, then clean the roof and treat it with a good quality roof treatment that allows the roof to breathe but, at the same time, provides a protectant from the UV from the sun and from other environmental hazards.

If your roof is in restorable condition, the best value is to have the entire roof protected. It extends the life of the roof and gives a much more even appearance to the roof. Repair only will leave the roof with a "patchy" look for several years. Repairs only should only be used if the roof is in too old a condition to restore. It is a "buying time" action.
